Chicago, as a whole, is rather famous for its comedy clubs. Hoards of comedic talent come from training and working at different theaters in the city. However, none of these comedy clubs have been as influential as The Second City. Opening in 1959, comedic stars that have trained and performed here include the likes of Steve Carrell, John Candy, Gilda Radner, Tina Fey, Chris Farley, and much more. You won’t find another comedy club in Chicago that has a longer list of famous past performers than we do. This proves we have what it takes to locate quality talent.
With a diverse set of shows on multiple stages, The Second City is the comedy club to check out if you are looking for a variety. The shows are also rotating, so there is always something new to see, even for the most frequent of guests. Our three theaters are the Mainstage Theater, the e.t.c. Theater, and the UP Comedy Club. In addition, we have a touring company that can come and perform where need be. We offer improv shows that are available in a number of themes so you can find the one that best suits your preferences. At our comedy club, you will also find stand up comedy and even classes so you can learn the fine art of comedy for your own uses. We are one of the most diverse comedy theaters in the city.
The variety of shows available offers up the ability to see a show with anyone, whether it is for a bachelorette party, date night, or a birthday celebration. Shows can range from “Best of” to satiric revues, covering topics all across the board. If you have not seen an improv show at The Second City yet, it should go at the top of your Chicago bucket list.
Whether you are a lifelong resident of Chicago or are just here for the weekend, your Chicago experience is not complete without a trip to a comedy club. Why wouldn’t you go to the most prolific one in the city? Our list of alumni keeps growing; you may just see the next Stephen Colbert up on stage! The performers are trained in the art of improvisation, meaning anything can happen, but you know it will be hilarious. Comedy doesn’t have to be scripted. In fact, some of the most brilliant comedians were known for their ability to improvise their lines and make random adjustments to the script, making the movie or other performance even more enjoyable for audiences. You will find this same kind of ambiance when you attend one of our shows, regardless of which stage you choose.
Aside from shows, choose The Second City for training in the art of improv! Our teachers are also performers and have often been through a similar training program. These classes are a great way to learn a skillset that includes confidence, the ability to step out of your shell, and more. You do not need to want to be a comedian to enjoy our classes at this comedy club! Some of our students are simply looking for a way to have some fun and get out for a night, rather than pursue a career in comedy. That’s why we have created these classes on a flexible schedule so anyone can enjoy a night of laughter and learning.
Though our shows are rehearsed, and some are relatively scripted, The Second City is an improv comedy club at heart. Those that train here are taught the art of improv and are able to think on their feet and be funny at the same time. If you are looking for a new experience, check out The Second City! From learning how to improvise at our Training Center or laughing along with the audience at our comedy club, we have an opportunity for you.
We understand comedy can be an extremely personal thing for both the performer and the members of the audience. This is why our comedy club strives to provide a variety of entertainment options, giving everyone the chance to see something that will tickle their funny bone and make them laugh.
