Acting 1

Acting

Whether you’re interesed in acting or improvisation, we know that one of the keys to success is being present, connected, and grounded in the emotional reality of the moment. In a Second City mainstage revue, the comedy doesn’t just come from the written scenes, the jokes & the premises… the truly deep audience laughs that people remember for years come from great performances.
In our first level, we’ll help you immerse yourself in improv exercises designed to broaden your emotional range. You’ll discover how emotionally committing to a scene can help engage the audience, leading to truly memorable performances.
We’ll also explore recognizable human behavior, an essential asset for comedic actors, and start working with neutral scenes that can help you explore the dramatic side of comedy. We’ll touch on the work of Viola Spolin and Sanford Meisner as we explore established techniques in this level.
Our curriculum focuses on improvisation to help you master these skills, and we recommend students take at least one 7-week improv course before joining this class to get the most out of the experience. At the end of this level, you will be prepared to do a cold read at a mock audition using what you have learned.

The Second City has been creating comedy through improvisation for 60+ years. Actors improvise ideas during rehearsals until they find a funny scene. This unique process has produced some of the greatest comedy writers of our time. Whether writing a sketch, screenplay, or performing improv, everything starts… with an idea.

In this 7-week course, you will learn the fundamentals of developing an idea into a premise, a premise into a pitch, and a pitch into a sketch. Below is a detailed outline of the main homework assignment and the theme for each week’s class.

Week 1: Ideas – 1 Minute Story

Week 2: Comedic Premises – 1 Minute Rant

Week 3: Pitches – Scene Pitches

Week 4: Dialogue – 1 Page of Dialogue – Opinion

Week 5: Behavior – 1 Page of Dialogue – Behavior

Week 6: Transformation – 2 Page Sketch – Transformation

Week 7: Location – 2 Page Sketch – Location

This class utilizes two platforms to engage with students: Canvas and Zoom. Each week’s lessons and homework assignments will be available on Canvas, while live classes with fellow students and the Second City instructor will be hosted on Zoom.

Each lesson on Canvas will unlock one week before the corresponding in-person Zoom class, including the first week. Additionally, homework assignments should be posted to Canvas 24 hours before each Zoom class.

Acting 3

Acting

Advanced

For over 60 years, The Second City has been archiving scripts and video from all of the resident stage revues. In this class, students will be assigned scenes and monologues from this collection to workshop and perform. When actors are handed a script, before they can start thinking about character and performance, they must first understand how the scene works. This deeper scene analysis allows actors to make appropriate choices with their performance to help fuel the engine of the scene. Once the character’s role in the scene becomes clear, the character development begins. When working with text, actors will learn to break down a script and identify emotional reactions and behavior within the performance. It’s easy to give off a natural performance when it is your own words, but translating that ease to someone else’s words is an entirely different skill. Actors will be expected to memorize scripts at this level. The class will culminate in a 40 minute showcase of Second City archive material. You must complete Acting 1 & 2 before taking this course.

Writing 3 builds on the exploration into a Second City running order established in Writing 2 by focusing on the various sources of scenic inspiration and delving deeper into satirical writing. Writing 3 addresses the satirical needs of a sketch comedy revue running order as well as the skills and needs brought on by the varied talents of the cast. By filtering the lessons acquired in previous Writing levels through the lens of satire, students get better acquainted with the style and asks of a Second City-style show. Students examine various sources of inspiration such special skills of the whole cast, other cast members, and personal experiences. As students sharpen the picture of the elements and source of Second City material, they deepen their exploration and understanding of satire and practice several formats that support strong satirical premises. Students in Writing 3 continue developing variety in their comedic scenes by focusing on the needs of the cast and/or the running order. Students continue to work with one another to develop scenes by collaborating on varied satirical premises.

Conservatory Level 3 is dedicated to the study of the many different types of scenic styles that are employed in sketch creation.

Students learn to improvise with the goal of creating potential sketch ideas built upon the foundation of classic comedic styles such as Fish Out of Water or Town Hall group scenes. Some of the characters or premises generated through this work may be carried over and used in the sketch show created during the Advanced Conservatory Grad Revue Process.

At the end of this term, students will need to audition for acceptance and ensemble placement in Grad Revue.

Improv for Actors 1

Improv

Intermediate

In today’s entertainment industry, improv and the ability to work without a script has become an essential tool not only for rehearsal, but for performance on screen and stage, as well as auditioning. Improv for Actors 1 is for people interested in how to be a better actor. IFA-1 is geared toward both working and post-grad actors who are looking to expand their craft with skills of improvisation. It’s also a great option for people with a theater degree or background in the dramatic arts to have fun with new people in a new environment.
IFA-1 covers the fundamental elements of scene work, creating environment, and scenic transformation. Students acquire skills that can be applied to scripted and non-scripted work. Students become more improvisational in written moments and more confident when they improvise.
Students work on building ensemble, object work, and the essence of a good improvisational scene. Using games, exercises, and other play, students explore relationships, character motivation, and heightening techniques to create compelling scenes and characters purely out of improv.
Improv for Actors 1 is for students with a theater degree, currently enrolled in a full-length collegiate theater program, or have the equivalent amount of professional training and/or experience. Students must submit an acting résumé for consideration to be placed in IFA-1. Please submit a résumé through our online application.

The documentary Second to None chronicles Mick’s process of directing a show for The Second City.

Mick’s first book, “Improvise. Scene from the Inside Out” (Heinemann, 2004) reached its 10th printing, and is widely regarded as a seminal work on the subject of Improvisation. It was re-issued with three additional chapters in 2016 under Meriwether Publishing. Meriwether published Mick’s second book, “Behind the Scenes: Improvising Long Form“, in 2016, as well.

Upon returning to Chicago, Jennifer spent several years working in many of Chicago’s theatres including The Annoyance, Northlight, and The Body Politic. She toured for two years with Second City’s National Touring company and was a company member on a Second City resident stage prior to moving to New York in 1994. There, she continued her career by working in regional theatres around the country, Off-Broadway theatre, film, and television. She returned to Chicago in 2002 to become President, Executive Producer and owner of the Annoyance Theatre, and continues to work on film, television and stage.

Jennifer has appeared as recurring characters Judge Cohen on Proven Innocent and Cathy Briscoe on NBC’s Law and Order, and also in shows such as Chicago PD, Empire, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Exit 57, and in several national and regional commercials. Her feature film credits include the soon to be released (Fall 2024) Everything Fun You Could Possibly Do in Aledo, Illinois (for which she received Best Actress award at the Star City Film Festival), The Eyes, iMurders, Chicago Boricua, and Volcano, and the award winning short films A Million Miles Away (Sundance) and The Cure (Slamdance).

Breaking Down the Scene: A Q&A Discussion with Mick Napier

Improv

Acting

Writing

Ever wondered how legendary Second City scenes featuring the likes of Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch, and Scott Adsit were crafted? In this exclusive Q&A, Mick Napier—director of over 15 Second City revues—will break down some of the most iconic moments from The Second City stage. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, discovering how scenes evolve from initial improv to polished sketch.

Plus, this event will feature clips from classic Second City revues, providing a rich, interactive experience as Mick shares insights on how to shape improv into lasting comedic gold. Whether you’re an improv enthusiast or sketch comedy fan, this discussion will offer valuable takeaways for everyone. Come prepared with questions—this is a rare chance to learn from one of improv’s true visionaries!

About Mick Napier: Founder and visionary behind the acclaimed Annoyance Theatre, Mick Napier is known both nationally and internationally as an innovator and creative force in comedy, improvisation, and theater. His belief in the element of risk-taking that is at the core of improvisation influences his work and his direction, inspiring genuine creativity in any project with which he is involved.

With the Annoyance, Mick has spent more than 20 years developing and cultivating a style of work and production that has been both acclaimed and imitated. As a Director and Artistic Consultant for the internationally renowned Second City he made his mark having directed more than 10 revues there, including the 40th and 50th Anniversary revues, and Paradigm Lost, which earned him a Joseph Jefferson Award for direction. Mick has also directed such high-profile actors and writers as Martin Short (Martin Short & Friends), Jeff Garlin (I want Someone to Eat Cheese With), and David & Amy Sedaris in their Obie Award Winning hit One Woman Shoe.

In film, Mick directed and edited Annoyance Productions’ first feature film Fatty Drives the Bus, which was released by Troma Pictures in November 1999. For television, he was

writer/performance director for the Cable Ace nominated Exit 57, which aired on Comedy Central for two seasons, Creative Producer on the nationally syndicated sketch TV show The Sports Bar, and for HBO/Comedy Central, he directed the live pilot: T.B.A. His original animations have appeared on the cable programs Tame Show, and R-Rated, as well as in the Chicago Comedy Film Festival.

In addition at The Annoyance, Mick has directed over 20 original productions. Notable ones include Coed Prison Sluts, the longest running musical in Chicago, Splatter Theater, an annual Halloween blood bath, The Tragedy of Balloon Boy, That Darn Antichrist, and more recently The Boy Scout Musical and Swear Jar.

As an Actor, Mick has appeared in the films Ice Harvest and Let’s Go to Prison, Watch, and Talent, and on television as a talent judge in the Canadian reality show Second to None, and in Shrink, a SeeSo television series.

Mick worked with many companies and organizations over the past 15 years in areas such as Communication, Collaboration, Innovation, Leadership, and Presentation.

Mick also enjoys a mentalist act with his partner and partner, Jennifer Estlin; they go by the name Napier and Estlin.

Youth Ensemble (11-13)

Kids and Teens

Improv

The Youth Ensemble is for students ages 11-14 who have improv and/or acting experience and want to develop and perform in an original show with an ensemble. This class gives you the full experience of developing a Second City revue. Students will experience the thrills and frustrations that come from creating something from nothing. It is a great experience that teaches many life lessons. Students will walk away having accomplished something that not many people have done.

This is the highest-level performance class for youth and teens so students will build on skills they have already learned. There is still opportunity to learn new things depending on the individual student’s background. For example, if a student has a background in improv they will learn more about acting or music. There are also many life lessons to be learned about working closely with other people and performing in front of a crowd.

This class involves creating an approximately twenty-five minute long original Second City-style revue. You will work within an ensemble, you will create songs with a Musical Director, and you will develop scenes and play performance-level improv games.

No audition is required but students must have at least two terms of classes or 2 summer camps with the Second City or equivalent experience. Please use this form to submit your interest.

Please note these performances happen outside of regular class time.

Teen Ensemble (Ages 14-18)

Kids and Teens

Improv

The Teen Ensemble is for students ages 14-18 who have improv and/or acting experience and want to develop and perform in an original show with an ensemble.
Musical Improv Conservatory Auditions

Music

Improv

The Musical Improv Program is for improvisers who love creating musical scenes, and are excited to use music in their comedy career. The Second City uses songs and musical improv on all of it’s stages, and learning how to do it is a lot of fun! Students who complete this program will graduate with a deeper understanding of musical improv, approached in it’s many forms – in game play, narrative, and written work. The aim is to create improvisers who can execute these skills on a professional stage at The Second City, or anywhere else. Students in this program can expect support, encouragement, and notes to grow by.

LEVELS 1 – 2

The first two levels of the music program focus on demystifying musical improv and it’s many elements, and turning them into executable and performable skills! Game play, making strong vocal and musical choices, song structures and rhyming; building musical scenes with authenticity, and building group songs in a fun and supportive environment. Shows are scheduled at each level, and a retention audition is held at the end of Level 2.

LEVELS 3 – 5

The goal of Levels 3-5 is to give the student a professional level experience of musical improv training. Game play for the audience, styles and genres, and long form narratives will be explored with an eye toward re-improvisation and lyric writing. Each level will have a show, with Level 5 culminating in previews and a four-show run of a musical variety show.

AUDITIONS

Please come dressed comfortably for movement and ready to sing! Walk-ins may be accommodated, but are not guaranteed.

Intro to Writing for TV & Film

Writing

Beginners

Television

Intro to Writing for TV & Film is for anyone who wants to learn the crucial basics of writing for film and television or anyone with a great idea of a movie who needs help putting it into (properly formatted) words. It gives you a strong foundation for TV and film writing, demystifies the language and process of writing, and gives you the tools to begin turning your great idea into the next Citizen Kane/Troop Beverly Hills (same thing).

You’ll learn about the language of film/TV writing, the importance of deadlines, the unique qualities of a cinematic story versus a sketch, lots of screenplay formatting, how and what to pitch, and the scale of your ideas.

You’ll watch films and TV shows with a critical ear for dialogue and structure, read scripts, learn how to pitch, pitch those great ideas, and create outlines or treatments for that million-dollar sitcom or film idea. Oh, and table reads!

This course is a great introduction to the Comedy TV Pilots and Writing for Late Night programs.

Longform Weekends

Improv

Advanced

Learn a new form or dive deeper into one you already know and love. This is a workshop for experienced improvisers who are looking to take their longform knowledge to the next level. Students will come together to immerse themselves in a single format and then showcase their skills in a public performance on one of our studio stages.

Throughout this workshop, participants will become a part of a new ensemble; review grounded scene work, and learn new editing techniques; learn the ins and outs of a longform format, and perform it the very next day.

October’s Form: The Bevy
The Bevy longform relies on the rapid adoption and amplification of other team members’ ideas and initiations, characterized by an almost immediate, full-body commitment from the entire group. The Bevy is played thematically and uses only physical transformations for editing scenes over sweep edits (See iO’s Whimsey Lohan).

Bevy was originally created in 2002 by Carrie Barret, Jennifer Cargill, Claire Clairmont, Kate Hawley, Holly Laurent (SC Mainstage alumnus), Nikki Lindgren (SC e.t.c. alumnus), Erica May, Lisa Nagatomo and Shannon Winpenny. David was a classmate of these amazing women and graduated with all of them in 2001 from iO. The group formed as they wanted to create a smart and beautiful long form piece that just happened to contain all women.

David Montgomery is a faculty member at The Second City and has performed, produced and directed improv for over 20 years. He saw every Bevy show over their 3 years together except for their performance in The LA Comedy Festival.

Prerequisites: Strongly recommended for current Conservatory students and graduates as well as improvisers with a minimum of one full year of formal improv training and performance experience. Please email studentsuccess@secondcity.com for approval.

Teen Ensemble (Ages 14-18)

Kids and Teens

Improv

The Teen Ensemble is for students ages 14-18 who have improv and/or acting experience and want to develop and perform in an original show with an ensemble.

Course topics include:

  • How and when to edit

Writing the Humorous Personal Essay (On-demand)

Writing

Online

Do you have funny personal stories to share? In this four-week course, you will learn to write about humorous experiences in your own life. We will discuss how to make your stories interesting and relatable to other people.

We will brainstorm ideas and develop them into personal essays. You can write about daily observations or perhaps you have a larger, more important story you’ve been wanting to tell for a long time.

We will analyze personal essayists and what funny techniques they use to capture an audience’s attention. By looking at what gives other writers a unique perspective on life, you can develop your own voice as a writer. We will also discuss where you can publish these types of personal essays.

This course is for people who want to share their experiences while being funny at the same time. Everyone has a unique story to tell and this course will help you figure out what your story is and how to tell it in a confident manner.

There will be an online discussion board to create a supportive classroom community in addition to individualized feedback. No experience is necessary — all are welcome!

Sketch Writing Level 3 (On-demand)

Writing

Intermediate

In Online Sketch Writing 3 you will continue building the blocks of a sketch revue! Explore sketch structures that “break the rules”, including blackouts and clothesline scenes. Expand your ability to collaborate with other writers as you learn the structure of a Second City sketch revue.

Class Work Examples: Week 2
1. Create a skillset scene based on one of the two skills you chose from the post directly below yours in the Discussion Board. Use that abundance work and take a big risk! Remember, no one is actually performing this, so you are free to write something wild. It doesn’t matter if the person who wrote the skill is a master or novice, or if you chose flame-throwing and the theater wouldn’t allow it.
Just write.

2. Freewrite for 10-15 minutes daily, and post those journals in the Journals Section.

Commitment: 2-3 hours per week, 8 weeks

Technical Requirements: Final Draft is always great, but sending scenes in PDF is required.

Sketch Writing Level 2 (On-demand)

Writing

Online

Building on Online Sketch Writing 1, students will continue to learn the universal comedy techniques used in mainstream media as well as focusing on satire, character development and rewriting.

Class Work Examples: 2-Person relationship sketches aren’t just scenes with two random people. The purpose of a relationship sketch is to explore the dynamics, emotions, wants and needs of people who are related by blood, are in a love or friend relationship or are even in work, school, neighbor relationships.

Choose a person from your life that you know very well. You have strong feelings for this person. Those feelings could be love or hate, but they are strong! For 10 minutes write about how you relate to this person. Is it easy–like this person can read your mind or finish your sentences? Is it hard–like this person misunderstands everything you say or constantly fights with you. Explore your history. Explore your feelings. How do you talk to this person? Do they have particular catch phrases?

The purpose of this exercise is to analyze YOUR OWN relationship in order to understand that a Relationship Sketch is more than two folks just making us laugh. The purpose is to explore how they relate or don’t.

Commitment: 2-2.5 hours per week (30-45 minutes for the lesson, 30-75 minutes for the assignment)

Technical Requirements: PDF-formatting software. Final Draft or any other script writing software (Celtx, Scrivener, etc.) is recommended but not required.

Recommended next level: Sketch Writing Level 3
